Generation SDG – Deciphering the SDGs for the everyday lives of youth

Cooperation Partnership in Youth

CONTEXT

The term “Generation SDG” emphasizes the unique perspective, energy, and innovative spirit of young people in tackling complex issues such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and sustainable development. It highlights the role of youth as change-makers, mobilizers, and leaders in implementing the SDGs at the local, national, and global levels.
The link between youth work as a sector and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is crucial in fostering the active involvement of young people in delivering the SDGs. Research and statistics consistently demonstrate the significant role of youth workers and young people in achieving sustainable development. According to the World Youth Report, youth-led organizations and projects have demonstrated their ability to drive positive change and make significant contributions towards achieving the SDGs.

OBJECTIVES

Generation SDG aims to empower and mobilise young individuals to become active agents of change, leading local action projects in our communities and working towards the realisation of the SDGs.

Main objectives:
1) To increase SDG Awareness and Understanding among young people which will ensure young participants have a comprehensive understanding of the 17 SDGs, their significance, and their global relevance, fostering a sense of purpose in addressing these goals.
2) To support Youth Advocacy and Engagement of young people which will empower young people to be effective advocates for the SDGs, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to articulate the importance of sustainable development and inspire positive change within their communities and beyond.
3) To promote Active Citizenship and Social Responsibility among young people which will encourage young people to actively engage in addressing local and global challenges tied to the SDGs, cultivating a sense of active citizenship and social responsibility among them.
4) To promote Climate Action and Environmental Stewardship among young people which will specifically focus on SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), educating young people about the importance of climate action, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable land management, and inspiring them to take concrete actions in these areas.
5) To inspire Youth-Led Community-Based Initiatives which will motivate young advocates to take leadership roles in community-based projects that contribute to the achievement of specific SDGs, promoting a sense of ownership and responsibility for positive change in their immediate surroundings.

ACTIVITIES

WP2 – SDG Online Modules and MOOC platform: 17 hours of online learning content, one hour addressing each of the SDGs. These E-Modules explain how each goal relates to specific challenges faced by communities and the world at large and will showcase the progress made towards the SDGs on a global level. These modules include best practices, case studies and success stories, showcasing how young people have been mobilised to support the attainment of the SDGs in their communities. Generation SDG will engage 20 young people, ages 15 to 24, in completing the e-Modules.

WP3 – Youth Action and Participation Toolkit: The toolkit will include 36 separate materials for young people to be able to deliver youth advocacy projects in their communities. These include 18 specific activities to show young people how to engage in youth advocacy, and 18 resources and tools that will support their efforts in planning their advocacy projects and campaigns. The Youth Advocacy Toolkit will be delivered to 20 youth advocates in each country.
This will include resources such as sample speeches, social media guidelines, and templates for posters or infographics that can be customised and shared. It will provide access to platforms, both online and offline, where they can network, share ideas, and collaborate on projects related to the SDGs as well as simple monitoring and evaluation frameworks, along with resources to help young people to measure and assess the effectiveness and outcomes of their initiatives.

WP 4 – Promotion and Sustainability: In-lieu of a Transnational Training Activity, and in keeping with our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, all partners will engage 2-3 young people from their local communities in the 3 planned Virtual Collaboration Spaces. All partners will attend these sessions and will support the sessions by facilitating discussion, break-out rooms, and online collaborative activities between youth participants.
Generation SDG partners will develop the following key promotional materials: logo and brochure, website, 5 project newsletters, promotional strategy, social media strategy, impact assessment strategy, and sustainability strategy.

All partners host local Generation SDG youth-led community events to promote the project with 180 people across the consortium.

RESULTS

1) Generation SDG Online Modules: this training package comprises 18 one-hour e-modules addressing the 17 SDGs and one introductory lesson outlining the role of youth advocacy in delivering the SDGs.

PARTICIPANTS

The primary target group is young people aged 15 to 24 residing in Spain, Ireland, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, and Romania.
20 young people will be testing the SDG e-Modules and the Youth Action and Participation Toolkit in each partner organisation, 120 in total.
12 young people across the consortium will attend the Virtual Collaboration Spaces.
15-20 young people will also be engaged in planning, hosting, and attending the Generation SDG events.
Secondary target groups benefitting from the materials developed include front-line youth workers, youth work educators, youth work networks, youth forums and youth policymakers.

IMPACT

Through the Generation-SDG project, we aim to support young people in our communities to become local champions of the SDGs and to lead local action projects in our communities. Promoting local action for the SDGs fosters a sense of community, collaboration, and social cohesion. When young people come together to work towards common goals, they build networks, establish partnerships, and enhance social connections. This not only strengthens their relationships with one another but also creates a collective effort towards sustainable development, inspiring others in the community to get involved and contribute to positive change.
